Terms of submission

JEB considers for publication original research that has not been previously published. Submission to JEB implies that this is the case and that the submitted manuscript is not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

During the submission process, authors are asked to declare that the manuscript has been seen and approved by all authors. Submission also implies that authors agree to abide by JEB's editorial policies and publishing ethics, including the declaration of any competing interests to the journal on submission of a manuscript.

Upon article acceptance, most Research Articles and Methods & Techniques papers are posted on the journal website as accepted author manuscripts (Advance Online Articles) prior to journal copyediting and layout and in advance of publication of the print and online issues in which they will subsequently appear. Authors who would prefer their accepted author manuscript NOT to be posted as an Advance Online Article should tick the relevant check box during the submission process.

Online submission

Please format your manuscript in accordance with our manuscript preparation guidelines.

For new submissions, we recommend that you submit your paper as a single PDF file that contains all the necessary text, figures and tables. However, if your manuscript contains figures that you wish reviewers to view at high resolution, please submit individual text and figure files (see our figure preparation guidelines for more information). Our submission system converts submitted files (PDFs or individual files) into a PDF file for the review process, which the corresponding author must proof.

For revised submissions and accepted manuscripts, you are required to provide all source text and figure files. Please note that revised manuscripts will be treated as a new submission if they are not submitted within 3 months of the date of the initial decision.
