Communications with the media

JEB encourages interactions with the media. Our policy is to release information about our content in a way that provides fair and equal access to the media, allowing it to provide informed comment based on the complete and final version of the paper that is to be published. Authors and their institutions’ press offices are then able to interact with the media ahead of publication and benefit from any subsequent coverage.

The News & Views Editor selects up to four research articles from each issue of the journal for promotion to journalists. Press releases are based on the Inside JEB articles that are published in each issue of the journal and are distributed by email. If you wish to be added to the press release distribution list, please contact the kathryn{at}biologists.com. Journalists wishing to obtain copies of articles ahead of publication or requiring contact details for the corresponding author of the research article, must first contact the kathryn{at}biologists.com and are required to respect the journal’s embargo policy. We endeavour to notify authors that a journalist has requested their research paper before the journalist contacts them, in order to allow the author time to prepare for the interview.
For a selection of articles, we also post press releases on the AAAS’s press release website, EurekAlert!, which is accessed by over 6000 registered journalists. Press releases posted on EurekAlert! are approved by authors prior to submission and are posted 4–7 days prior to publication of the research article. We request that at least one author on the paper is available for interview during the embargo period. Guidelines are available from the kathryn{at}biologists.com for authors requiring help in dealing with press enquiries.

Embargo policy

JEB enforces a strict embargo policy and requires all journalists to respect the embargo, which is set at 00:15 Eastern Standard Time on the day of publication and is stated clearly in the email press release and on press releases posted on EurekAlert!. Authors are also free to arrange press coverage through their own institution’s press office, but we request that the embargo is respected.
