IP addresses

Help on IP addresses
Every computer connected to the Internet has an IP address. Like a postal code (or zip code), this IP address identifies the location of the computer so that information can be sent to and from it.
An IP address consists of four numbers, separated by dots.
IP addresses are grouped into IP networks. Here are three types of IP networks:

  • Class A networks contain several million computers. The first number of the IP addresses of all these computers is the same. Very few organisations are large enough to merit a class A network

Class A networks begin with a number in the range of 1 to 126

  • Class B networks contain several thousand computers. All these computers share the same numbers in the first two positions of their IP addresses. Many universities own one or more class B networks

Class B networks begin with a number in the range of 128 to 191

  • Class C networks contain several hundred computers. All these computers share the same numbers in the first three positions of their addresses. Many small organisations own one or more class C networks. It is also common practice to split a class B network into many class C networks - this is called "subnetting"

Class C networks begin with a number in the range of 192 to 223.

    For example:
18.245.33.1 and 18.128.176.4 are both in the class A network 18.*.*.*
145.65.134.6 and 145.65.98.204 are both in the class B network 145.65.*.*
196.72.8.144 and 196.72.8.13 are both in the class C network 196.72.8.*

We control institutional subscriptions by checking the IP addresses of the computers accessing our site. You need to inform us of the IP networks you would like covered under your institutional online subscription, separately identifying proxy servers.

Please only register IP addresses of computers that are used by persons or departments served by your library.

Update IP addresses

FAQS

My institution has a subscription to the journals of The Company of Biologists and access to the journals online, but I am not able to see the full text of articles. I am prompted for a username and password. Why is this happening?

When this happens, the IP address for your machine is not being recognised by our computer. This is caused by one of three things:

  • Your institutional subscription has not yet been activated

  • The person who activated the online subscription did not register all needed IP addresses for your institution

  • The person who activated the online subscription does not realise that some subnets of your institution are routed through a proxy server

What should I do?

Send us Feedback so that we can begin to diagnose the problem.
Talk to your librarian and let them know you are having trouble.

My library subscribes to the paper journals of The Company of Biologists and I can't get access online. Why?

You need to purchase access to the journals online. You can do this as an individual or recommend that your library purchases an online subscription.

Who from my institution can access the journals of The Company of Biologists online?

The subscription fee allows for unrestricted Internet access at one location. Any user connecting from an authorised computer on your institutional network will be allowed access to the journals online.

What is an Institution?

For the most part, an Institutional Subscription authorises use at a localised site. A site is an organisational unit, and may be academic or non-academic. For organisations located in more than one city, each city office is considered a different site.

How will this work?

When someone attempts to use The Company of Biologists journals online, our server checks to see if the requesting computer is within the list of internet IP addresses provided by a subscribing institution. If it is, the reader will be able to use all those services enabled for institutional readers. For institutional users there are no usernames or passwords to remember and there is currently no limit on the number of readers from your institution who may access the journals online simultaneously.

How can I tell if my institution has subscribed to the journals of The Company of Biologists online?

If your institution has a subscription you will automatically have access to the tables of contents, abstracts, full text searching, full text display, PDFs, Medline and GenBank links, and future tables of contents. You'll also see a button at the top of the page confirming you are signed in as part of an institution.

If your institution has not subscribed, or if you wish to take advantage of the additional services available to individual subscribers, you can choose to access our journals online with an individual subscription.

If our online subscription expires and at some later date we reinstate our subscription, will we have access to all years of the electronic version?

Yes, when you buy a subscription to The Company of Biologists journals online, you have access to all years of the database.

How can I access the journals of the Company of Biologists online if I am not a subscriber and I don't have access through an institutional subscription?

Without a subscription you have access to the Table of Contents, abstracts and full text searching (but not full text viewing) at no cost and without having to register. Access to individual articles can be purchased. Archived content is made accessible after 6 months, without fee or registration.

If you still have questions, please contact sales{at}biologists.com.
